03/08/2012: Fiuggi: Day Four

An encouraging training session today as Mobido Diakite' and Albano Bizzarri returned to action after spending a fortnight on the sidelines. An additional boost is the news that Ederson is doing well in the gym as he recuperates from a knee injury. So far so good and he could return to action soon. Vladimir Petkovic began the session today by naming the squad for tomorrow night's friendly with Galatasaray although it is a relatively safeguarded secret until kick-off.
Today, Vladimir Petkovic began with a bizarre routine as he asked the players to play rugby. The aim of the rugby game was to pass the ball toward the net without physical confrontation although as the game progressed, the players became to play according to the proper rules of rugby. The exercise may seem to have no relevance to the round ball version whatsoever but the lack of confrontation forced the players to move quickly and work as a team - elements which of course are useful on the football pitch.
Petkovic later appeared to be trying to find roles for the players in the current squad as he worked with 11-a-side squads. Cana and Scaloni were once again deployed as centre-backs in training today while Lulic was yet again tested at left-back. Alfaro and Kozak were rotated as Tommaso Rocchi's strike partner. The system used was a 4-4-2 and considering Petkovic's admission that this will not be the preferred system, it seems clear that Petkovic is more concerned about where players play at the moment than how they play together.
