30/03/2011: Fair Play
Fair Play is considered one of the most important elements in the game of football. It is included as a major rule in FIFA's own Code of Conduct.
Fair Play is defined by FIFA very extensively; "Winning is without value if victory has been achieved unfairly or dishonestly. Cheating is easy but brings no pleasure. Playing fair requires courage and character. It is also more satisfying. Fair Play always has its reward, even when the game is lost. Playing fair earns you respect, while cheats are detested. Remember: it's only a game. And games are pointless unless played fairly".
To Play Fair is to play with grace and dignity, it is to promote the more encouraging points to the supporters and to the younger generations so that the game is turned around into a more socially enjoyable experience.
If we used the number of Yellow Cards (1 point) and Red Cards (2 points) as indicators of Fair Play, the following are "Serie A Fair Play" standings this season until week 30:
Rank | Team | Yellow | Red | Points | 1 | Internazionale | 48 | 1 | 50 | 2 | Udinese | 48 | 4 | 56 | 3 | AC Milan | 50 | 3 | 56 | 4 | Genoa | 49 | 4 | 57 | 5 | Lazio | 52 | 4 | 60 | 6 | Juventus | 52 | 5 | 62 | 7 | Palermo | 59 | 3 | 65 | 8 | Sampdoria | 60 | 3 | 66 | 9 | Bologna | 62 | 2 | 66 | 10 | Cagliari | 66 | 0 | 66 | 11 | Fiorentina | 59 | 4 | 67 | 12 | Bari | 58 | 5 | 68 | 13 | Cesena | 59 | 5 | 69 | 14 | Catania | 58 | 6 | 70 | 15 | Napoli | 71 | 4 | 79 | 16 | Lecce | 67 | 7 | 81 | 17 | Brescia | 76 | 3 | 82 | 18 | AS Roma | 69 | 7 | 83 | 19 | Chievo | 78 | 3 | 84 | 20 | Parma | 71 | 7 | 85 | By coincidence, Lazio's Fair Play standing is similar to the team achievements which is in 5th place.
The bottom 3 dirtiest teams are: AS Roma, Chievo, and Parma.
