  08/01/2013: Coppa Italia Quarterfinal: Lazio-Catania
email print
Lazio continues to fight on all three fronts and it has now come to the time of the second game in the Coppa Italia. After having squeezed through after beating Siena on penalties, Catania will be next opponent and looking back at how the game ended between the two sides in the league game, Lazio have a big revenge to seek and will look to do so at Stadio Olimpico at 21.00 CET on Tuesday.

If there is any of the competitions that Lazio play in this season that has shown of not being of highest priority it is the Coppa. Not a big issue maybe, if there is any time the usual starters should be given a rest it has to be in the one competition that is least attractive economically and fans-wise. However, the final is played in Rome and many feel this could be the real chance of lifting some silverware again. Despite being second and only five points behind league leaders Juventus in the standings few believe Lazio can be a real threat for the scudetto – while all the chances remain to go for cup glory.

Catania have had both ups and downs this season, with the 4-0 at home to an at that time confused Lazio side as the most impressive result so far for the Elefanti. There is no doubt that the Sicilians see the competition as a way to get to Europe and international football next season. Despite the current league position and the fact they are usually a much stronger home team than away team Catania must be taken seriously. One of the big names though, Lodi, got a straight red card in the last league match and at this point in time it has not been decided if the player will be suspended from the league only or if that will apply on the Coppa as well. The incident, where Lodi slapped a Torino player in their goalless draw at the weekend, might be ruled as harshly as leading to a suspension in all competitions. If not, the play maker will surely start and will be the player to keep an eye on for the Lazio midfield and defenders.

Catania also struggled to get through to the quarter finals. The opposition consisted of a well performing Parma and after a hard fought game the clash was decided through penalties also for the Rossazzuri, who came out on top and progressed to play Lazio.

Both coaches have expressed their will at winning the game and the hunger will be present for both teams. A few reserves will surely be given the chance on both sides and for Lazio the latest training session gave all indications needed to see what changes Petkovic is considering. Not only will many of the reserves be fielded, but the formation will also be altered to suit the players and to let the players get used to more formations and tactics than the usual and common 4-1-4-1, which Petkovic has preferred so far this season. A more traditional 4-4-2 is expected, where instrumental pieces such as Ledesma, Mauri and Klose are all expected to start on the bench.

Probable lineups:

Carrizo, Cavanda, Biava, Ciani, Radu, Gonzalez, Cana, Hernanes, Lulic, Floccari, Kozak.

Catania: Frison, Bellusci, Legrottaglie, Spolli, Marchese, Izco, Lodi, Almiron, Gomez, Castro, Barrientos.
