On this day in 1915, German cruiser 'Dresden' drowns during World War I. Dresden, a 3,600-ton light cruiser, was one of the fastest ships in the German Imperial Navy, capable of traveling at speeds of up to 24.5 knots. On the same day, Lazio drowned Internazionale di Napoli 2-1 in Naples. Positive trends continue into 1937 when Lazio collected another 0-2 victory in Genoa against Sampierdarenese in Serie A, week 24.

In 1943, Silvio Piola scored the opening goal for Lazio against Fiorentina, helping Lazio to 3-1 lead at the end of the first half, before Fiorentina clawed it back to 3-3 in the second period. This was week 24 of Serie A in 1942/43 season, on the same Sunday that British submarine HMS Thunderbolt was sunk off Sicily by the Italian corvette Cicogna, killing all on board, and the Kraków Ghetto is 'liquidated' during World War II. Another draw happened on Sunday, 14 March 1948, when Lazio were held 1-1 by Pro Patria in Serie A on week 26 of that season. If you are trying to learn French, then you might be interested to know that this day of the week in French is dimanche.

Lazio were defeated 0-1 by Torino at Olimpico on this date in 1954 - the same day as Brazil National football team play in yellow for the first time. Aldyr Garcia Schlee, a 19-year-old illustrator won the competition to design Brazil's new kit.

On two separate occasions, the Derby della Capitale has been staged on this date, both hosted by AS Roma, and both concluding in draws. In 1971; on the same day that Rolling Stones left England for France to escape paying taxes, Lazio were held to a 2-2 draw by AS Roma; again Chinaglia was one of the Lazio goal scorers. In 1976, the game ended with a goalless draw.

AC Milan were held 2-2 by Lazio at the Olimpico in 1993. Under allenatore Dino Zoff, Aron Mohamed Winter and Paul John Gascoigne (Gazza) were Lazio's goalscorers.

Lazio were kicked out from the UEFA Cup Quarter Final in 1995 by Borussia Dortmund. On this date Borussia Dortmund won 2-0 in the second leg. In the first leg, Lazio only managed to score a single goal, and even then, they needed help from Borussia Dortmund who gave us hope with an own goal.

Under Eriksson, Lazio travelled to Genoa in 1998 to shake Sampdoria with four convincing goals created by Jugovic, Nedved, and two by Diego Fuser. On the other side of the world, an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale shakes Southeastern Iran.

It gets better. Lazio won 5-1 against Olympique Marseille in the UEFA Champions League in 2000 on this date. Simone Inzaghi scored a record four goals in this match and Lazio passed through the Second Group “D” stage (Chelsea, Feyenoord, and Olympique Marseille), before been kicked out by Valencia in the Quarter Finals. It was a case of 'Double Ds' for Lazio as in 2001, Leeds United held Lazio to 3-3 under in a Champions League group "D" that consisted of Real Madrid, Anderlecht, and Leeds United. Unfortunately, Lazio got the booby prize on this second group stage as they crashed out.

Vladimir Putin had better luck on this day though, winning a second term as president of Russia in 2004. On the same day, Roberto Mancini's Lazio failed to fend off Udinese in a 2-2 draw at the Olimpico.

Former Lazio President Ugo Longo 69 years old passed away on this date in 2009.

The records above suggest a successful day for Lazio, but in contrast, Edy Reja took up a Lazio that were fighting to avoid relegation in 2010 and on this date, Bari gave Lazio another nightmare at home with 2 goals in front of 50,000 Lazio supporters, one of whom was Mauro Zarate. Consequently, Lazio were just 2 points above Livorno, one of three teams sitting in the relegation zone.

Tonight, Lazio host VfB Stuttgart to get a ticket into the UEFA Europa League Quarter Finals. Unfortunately, UEFA's actions will make this game less interesting than American Idol, as the game will be played behind closed doors.
