Earlier today on Twitter, Mauro Zarate claimed he was close to finalising a deal that would see him return to Argentina and his old club, Vélez Sarsfield. In the last few minutes, the Argentinian club has announced via his website that the transfer is official and that Mauro Zarate will begin to train with his new teammates as early as tomorrow.

The statement on the Vélez Sarsfield website reads as follows:

"Vélez Sarsfield can confirm that at noon on Sunday, the club reached an agreement with Mauro Zarate. In the next few hours, the deal will be completed and tomorrow, the youngest of the Zarate family will train with the team. Welcome home, Mauro, we were waiting for you."

Zarate and S.S. Lazio have been locked in a legal battle in recent months and Lazio called Zarate up to pre-season training in Auronzo di Cadore last week, only for the player to not respond to the call. There may yet be implications to this deal but Vélez Sarsfield and Mauro Zarate appear convinced that the homecoming is legal.
