These were dire days in Italy, as an entire nation mourns the losses from the Abruzzo earthquake earlier that week. Hundreds of casualties and thousands of homeless people in central Italy, but as they say in sporting terms, “the show must go on.”

And what a show it was today at the Stadio Olimpico, really everything we could desire from a tense, heart-felt Roman derby: goals, drama, and the inevitable yellow/red cards.

Lazio could be doubly satisfied with this victory today. Not only did they reacquire a bit of pride after 3 consecutive league losses, but they triumphed over their arch-rivals, increasing positive “home” trend in the Derby della Capitale to 3 (after the 3-0 and 3-2 victories in 2007 and 2008) and effectively nullifying Giallorossi’s Champions League hopes for the next season.

11 April 2010
Serie A 2010/11 week 33, Bologna-Lazio 2-3
Lazio scorers: Mauri, Dias, Rocchi
Attendances: 21.000

Both teams occupy the two places above the relegation zone and went into the game desperate for the points to haul them further clear of 18th-placed Atalanta. Bologna made the first move and was 2-0 up, but Stefano Mauri cut the deficit with a crucial goal a minute before half time. And two goals in five minutes from Andre Dias and substitute Tommaso Rocchi second-half earned the Biancoceleste victory and lifted six points clear of the relegation zone.
