  02/07/2014: Confusion over Onazi injury
email print
A number of respectable media outlets reported yesterday that Ogenyi Onazi had suffered a double leg fracture, following the publication of a story on a Nigerian website, however it appears as though Onazi did not suffer a leg break and will return to action in 3-5 weeks.

The nature of the injury is not entirely clear. There are reports that Onazi had minor surgery as he damaged a tendon, but the most recent reports suggest severe bruising, which would keep him out of action for a month.

Onazi has taken to Twitter to accept French midfielder Blaise Matuidi's apology, however, it is clear the Nigerian camp are still aggrieved by the referee's decision to merely book Matuidi. Nigerian forward Peter Odemwingie posted a picture of Onazi in a cast holding a red card yesterday and tweeted "Onazi just found the red card the referee lost yesterday."

Lazio are entitled to a maximum of 15,000 euro in compensation from FIFA for Onazi's injury, but Lazio's lawyer has said that at present, there are no plans to make a claim.
