12/08/2014: Lazio defeat Hamburg, but lose to Hannover

S.S. Lazio's stint in Germany has come to an end this weekend. Stefano Pioli focused predominantly on improving fitness in Germany, but he did get to see where Lazio stand in two friendlies against Hamburg on Friday evening and Hannover in Friday afternoon.

The short turnaround between the games forced Pioli into fielding two different line-ups, making substitutes during the game. Against Hamburg, Pioli fielded what could be regarded as the best eleven available to him from those who were present at Auronzo di Cadore. Their fitness levels were high and their standard of play was decent also as Filip Djordjevic and Mamadou Tounkara bagged the goals that gave Lazio a comfortable 2-0 victory.

Against Hannover, Pioli opted for a line-up that consisted of many players who had just returned from World Cup duty and were only just embarking on pre-season training and it showed as Hannover capitalised on unforgivable errors to coast to a 3-1 victory. Things did look better when Pioli introduced some of the players who currently have higher fitness levels and Lazio did manage a consolation goal as Ledesma converted from the spot, but truthfully, the Roman side were outclassed throughout.

Lazio do look to be making progress but it seems clear that many are far from the required level and are in a race against time with only 12 days to the club's first official game in the Coppa Italia. Lazio have further friendlies scheduled against local opposition on the 14th and 17th of August.
