25/11/2014: Lazio injury crisis set to continue
email print
Serious knee injuries to Santiago Gentiletti, Diego Novaretti and Michael Ciani have put Lazio in an awkward position with just over a month to go to the January mercato.

Gentiletti's anterior cruciate ligament injury has him sidelined until March at the very earliest, but injuries to Novaretti's meniscus and Ciani's hamstring could keep both players out of action until January, leaving Lazio with no cover at centre-back. The situation was desperate enough to see Stefano Pioli call Primavera defender Franjo Prce up for Juventus, but the news emerging from Formello is increasingly bleak.

Ciani's injury is just short of a hamstring tear. It is standard procedure in most European countries to have this type of injury treated with surgery, but in Italy, the practice is different. Surgery would rule Ciani out for three months, but Lazio are likely to rest the Frenchman up with an optimistic view of having him ready for Sampdoria and Roma in early January.

Ciani's injury is having a direct impact on Novaretti's treatment. The club ruled out operating on Novaretti's injury, but were beginning to consider that course of action. Novaretti is able to play with the injury, but he risks further damage and the club were apparently considering the idea of asking him to go under the knife. As Cinai is now out until the new year, the club are likely to keep Novaretti available by avoiding surgery.

Amid all this uncertainty, there are reports that Director of Sport Igli Tare will attend various European games this week to cast his eye over some of the names on our shortlist. Further injuries to the backline may force the club to make an emergency signing, but for the timebeing at least, the club are focusing their efforts on bringing someone in when the mercato reopens in 2015.
