28/05/2015: The Battle for Champions League
email print
The battle for the third and final Champions League spot has turned out to be one of the more intriguing Serie A games on Sunday, 31 May, 2015.

The 3rd position was occupied by the Biancoceleste over the winter break, something that was not in most Lazio fans' minds at the beginning of the season, an enormous success in itself given that this is Pioli’s first season in charge and his methods were expected to take some trial and error before they begin to work well.

Both sides will have enormous ambition to compete in next season’s Champions League. Napoli’s exit to Dnipro in the Europa League semi-final this month was a humiliation they will want to make amends for, and Pioli is aiming to put the Biancoceleste back on the Champions League map as they haven’t qualified since 2007.

Both have at least five big scoring threats, with Napoli boasting a potent strike force of Gonzalo Higuain, Jose Callejon, Marek Hamsik, Duvan Zapata and Manolo Gabbiadini. Lazio’s answer to that is Miroslav Klose, Felipe Anderson, Stefano Mauri, Antonio Candreva, and Filip Djordjevic.

Currently, Lazio are 3 points ahead of Napoli from 37 games overall with 20 wins, 6 draws, and 11 losses. Napoli with 18 wins, 9 draws, and 10 losses.

However, Head to Head analyses of Napoli-Lazio at San Paolo games since 1993/1994 season with 16 games played from Serie A and Coppa Italia were 7 games won by Napoli, 4 games by Lazio, and 5 draws.

Lazio will only need a draw to qualify for next season’s Champions League competition.

Forza Lazio!!
