01/07/2015: LazioLand Player of the Season - 2nd: Stefan de Vrij
email print

Stefan De Vrij had an exceptional season for Lazio, his work in the centre of defence was well recognized and he is number two in the top 5 Lazio players of the year for the 2014-2015 season. The decision De Vrij made to come to Italy to continue to develop and refine his defensive skills proved to be a good one for him, it took him some time to adjust but it has to be said that De Vrij adapted quickly to Serie A football. De Vrij featured in thirty Serie A matches for Lazio, picking up a total of 2,532 playing minutes in the centre back role in Lazio’s back line. De Vrij had several partners this season but it was Mauricio who came about in the January transfer window who he seemed to have the most camaraderie with. De Vrij missed two games this season with a heel spur injury and five games in April and early May of 2015 to a knee injury. De Vrij did also sit out a 1-0 loss to Udinese in Late September of 2014 due to a red card he picked up against Genoa also in a 1-0 loss the previous week.

Without De Vrij in the Lazio line-up, Lazio were one win, two draws and five losses, so he was an incredibly important player for Lazio. De Vrij is the welcomed addition in the centre of defence that Lazio have been missing for years, hopefully the Lazio management will be able to bring in other defensive players of his calibre to increase the fortitude of the defensive unit, which is essential for success in Serie A. De Vrij was also an integral part in Lazio’s Coppa Italia run, he missed two games due to his heel spur injury but did pick up 464 playing minutes in the five matches he played in that competition, his defensive play in the semi-final home and away ties against Napoli were definitive. De Vrij is yet another wonderful signing for Lazio and he has delivered great value to the squad on the playing field and as a solid investment to the front office. Let’s hope that as Lazio fans we have only witnessed the beginning and that De Vrij continues to develop into an even better world class defender in the sky blue Lazio shirt.

Forza Lazio!
