  27/10/2015: Preview: Atalanta - Lazio
email print
Lazio travel to Bergamo on Wednesday to square off against Atalanta, which will be a reunion of sorts with former coach Edy Reja. Lazio are coming off an impressive win against Torino on Sunday where Felipe Anderson shinned bright while Lulic and Klose delivered memorable performances. Atalanta on the other hand fell to defending Serie A champions Juventus by a score of 2-0. The table is quite tight at the moment and only 8 points separate league leaders Roma and Juventus in twelfth. Lazio are currently in 5th in the standings on 18 points, thanks to their horrible goal differential, while Atalanta are in 9th on 14 points.

Marchetti should start in goal for Lazio, he is Pioli’s go to man. In the center of defense we should see both Mauricio and Gentiletti shore up the middle, both played admirably against Torino, Mauricio refrained from any rash challenges and Gentiletti looks calm and collected and has noticeably improved. On the left and right hand sides of defense it should be both Basta and Lulic. Basta will need to continue his movements forward looking for crosses into the opposition’s penalty box. Lulic has become a rock at left back for Lazio and is quietly having a solid campaign.

In Midfield the emergence of Biglia back into the Lazio starting eleven cannot be understated, he should start with Onazi once again as Pioli will likely revert back to a 4-2-3-1 as he now has Biglia and Cataldi back from suspension at his disposal. Parolo will still be unavailable due to injury and is targeting the derby for his return. The three higher playing midfielders should be Anderson and Candreva out on the flanks and Savic in the central play maker’s role; he is improving steadily and has proved that he has a bright future. With a mid-week game and three in seven days it is possible Pioli may field Kishna, Morrison and Mauri to alleviate fatigue.

In attack for Lazio it should be Klose, he performs much better when he is part of the game from the onset, and he is less effective coming off the bench. Klose’s last performance should without doubt earn him the start providing he is fit to go, Matri should get some minutes coming off the bench, he is very effective with only the slightest of chances. Pioli will have his hands full once Keita and Djordjevic are both fully fit; there are only so many minutes.

Lazio will need to play this match in unison and aware, Atalanta are a solid team that are having a respectful campaign thus far. Atalanta play well at home and score more than once on most occasions, Moralez, Pinilla and Gomes can all make a defensive mistake costly and put the ball in the back of the net, Kurtic, Grassi and De Roon all move the ball forward progressively when in attack mode. This must be a solid performance for Lazio as things will only get harder from here until the international break as Milan, Rosenborg and Roma all lay in the waits. Lazio must not look ahead and concentrate on the task at hand, Lazio need to deliver the full three points away from home, one win and three losses with a -10 goal differential on the road is simply not good enough, the time is now to change this trend, a strong Lazio must prevail.

Forza Lazio!
