  29/08/2011: The Zarate saga continues...
email print

To leave or not to leave, that is the question surrounding Mauro Zarate, the player who caught the heart of the bianoceleste fans in 2008, but failed to repeat the form that made Lotito pay 20 million euros to tie him to the club until 2013.

It is well known for everyone now that Reja and Zarate seem not to be able to coexist. Edy Reja must have given the green light to sell the Argentine. Claudio Lotito does not want his biggest investment to turn to his biggest financial fiasco and insists that if Zarate to leave, an offer of 20 million euros is to be tabled, a task that Zarate's agent has been desperatly trying to accomplish but without any luck.

Speaking on the TV show Football Premium Club, Bozzo said: "Inter were the most party interested in Mauro, but the Nerazzuri want to take the player to Milan on loan with a right to buy at the end of the season, a scenario that has been rejected by Lotito as he insists to sell directly. Arsenal were interested but nothing materialized and we recently received inquiries from Liverpool, but there does not seem to be a club that is willing to meet Lotito's price, and for that I think Zarate will stay."

It is also reported that Genoa are interested in Maurito, but Preziosi cannot afford Lotito's asking price and despite their close relationship, Claudio Lotito is not willing to budge on this one, thus Genoa are looking at Gilardino.

Even Zamparini, Lotito's nemesis, has revealed to that he would love to have Mauro at Palermo, but that he cannot afford the Argentine.

Edy Reja is still silent after his burst against Zarate accusing the Argentine of wanting to leave, and when asked again, Edy Reja said that he only mentioned 10 % of what is happening. It is clear that Edy Reja has had enough with the Argentine and the reconciliation that is going to be tried by Bozzo should Zarate stay, might be a very difficult task.

It was 2 years ago that Claudio Lotito has declared that he will build Lazio around Mauro, but Zarate despite improving towards the end of last season, is still far from Zarate that spread terror in Serie A in 2008.

Zdenak Zeman however believes that should Zarate leave, the player could re-emerge again and Lazio will lament his loss. During his interview with Radio Mana Mana, the coach took a swipe at Edy Reja as he mentioned that had Zarate arrived to his squad being 5 kilograms overweight, he would have worked with him to make him lose them.

Bernardo Corradi took a swipe at Zarate and said that players should accept to stay on the bench and respect the coach's decision, and that it is enough honor to wear Lazio's shirt.

The Italian scene looks split on the situation between Reja and Zarate, and so are the laziali.

And now all clubs want Mauro Zarate except for the club that invested all in him, and till now no one can afford him.

So far it looks more likely that the Argentine will stay unless Lotito caved in to the pressure and lowered his demands. But in case Mauro stays will a new page be opened between Uncle Edy and him or will the struggle continue ?

We have one more day to find out.
