Nicknamed "El Tata" which in some South American dialects could mean "The Father" or "The Boobs/Breasts", we'll go with The Father.

Although a father would usually indicate a player with probably more experience or wisdom to give Alvaro is definitely a winner.

Growing up in Defensor Sporting Club system for his first 4 seasons where he encounters his first success winning the Pre-Libertadores Cup in Uruguay (The Domestic Equivalent of a League Cup) Followed by repeat quarterfinal appearances in the Coppa Libertadores (South American Champions Leauge) and the Coppa Sudamerica. (UEFA Cup equivalent)

Success pays off on the home front where he is transferred to one of the most successful South American Clubs in Boca Juniors in Argentina. Straight away an Apertura awaits El Tata. However it's a long climb back to the top for Alvaro as he suffers a knee injury in the Clausura portion of the season missing the remainder of the season. The following season he returns to the homeland with Nacional on loan.

In the summer of 2010 he moved to Lazio for a trial period. In Auronzo di Cadore he impresses and the purchase is ratified on July 29, becoming in effect a player for the Biancoceleste. With Lazio he made his official debut on September 19, 2010 as successor to Stefano Mauri in the final minutes of the victory away against Fiorentina. On October 27 he opens his goal account in the blue-white jersey in the Italian Cup match against Portsmouth winning 3-0. With Lazio’s impressive run to the top in the first half of the 2010-2011 season space is limited and patience is thin for El Tata. Emotions come to a head on the final day of the season before the winter break where he refuses to make a cameo appearance in the final minutes against Udinese. Much controversy is made of his attitude as he must be coaxed into coming onto the field. Rumors emerge that he might be released during the winter market but a good game against Roma in the Italian Cup, wins the trust of coach Edy Reja and since then more frequent appearances await El Tata.
