Lazio’s bad week continued and after the 1-0 loss against Genoa the team was defeated again with the same result but this time in Rome.
It was obvious that both teams aren’t willing to take a risk at the start of the game and the first 20-25 minutes of the game were a tactical battle mainly in the midfield. Lazio had most of the possession of the ball but nothing dangerous happened in front of Karnezis’ goal. Udinese made a couple of good attacks in the first minutes of the game but nothing too dangerous for Marchetti who came back between the bars after being out for numerous problems, mainly injuries. He showed that he will need some time to find his good form after a few uncertain interventions in Lazio’s box. Klose was nowhere to be seen in the first half as Udinese’s defense kept him well off the ball while Anderson and Candreva’s attempts to make something good in attack were not that impressive. The away side made a few good counter attacks and after one of them they managed to score a goal. Thereau found himself alone in the 6-yard box and scored a relatively easy goal. It was obvious that Novaretti and Cana haven’t played that much as a duo in official games. After the goal Lazio kept trying to make something good in attack and score an equalizer before half time but no creativity and Udinese’s good and well prepared defense was a tough nut to crack for Anderson, Candreva and Klose.
At the start of the second half Pioli made an offensive change and Djordjevic came in for Anderson which lead to a change of tactics with both Klose and Djordjevic in attack. Lazio tried to find a way towards Karnezis’ goal with lots of crosses which lead to nothing that dangerous. Keita and Lulic also came in to try and help their team mates find a way to score a goal but the only thing the players kept on doing in crossing the ball in the box and probably hoping that Klose and Djordjevic will do something with it. Lazio had a total of 25 crosses and none of them were even close enough to be called dangerous. Even though Udinese were thinking only about their defense and Lazio went all in attack through the whole second half Karnezis didn’t have that much work to do. A person would think that with so much attacking power (Candreva, Klose, Djordjevic, Keita, Lulic) Lazio will at least make Udinese sweat more and work really hard to keep their one goal advantage but the guests looked quite comfortable with all those crosses Lazio’s attacking players could only offer.
It’s obvious that Pioli and his men were under a lot of pressure after the loss from Genoa and they will be have even bigger problems after a second consecutive loss and a third from four games from the start of the Serie A season. Next game will be quite crucial for the team and if they really want to reach a Europa League spot they will have to show desire, a lot more creativity and energy to win a point of three from Palermo.
