SS Lazio welcomed arch rivals AS Roma today at the Stadio Olimpico in what would be a battle of pride, honour and of course potential Champions League qualification for next season. This Derby Della Capitale was unquestionably the most important Rome derby since the Coppa Italia final two years ago. The Biancocelesti colours and the yellow eagle in the curva nord was a sight for sore eyes to see, the Stadio Olimpico was packed and the rest of Rome was a ghost town. As suspected, Marchetti would get the start for Lazio in goal; he was rested last Wednesday in the Coppa Italia final against Juventus so he should be well prepared. In the four defensive positions for Lazio, it was De Vrij partnered with Gentiletti in the centre; Pioli really appears to favour these two men together in defence holding the back line firm for Lazio. On the right hand side of defence, Basta would pick up the start, opposite to him on the left side of defence, as expected; it would be Lulic in favour of the injured Radu.

In midfield for Lazio, surprisingly Biglia was healthy enough to pick up the start, he was doubtful for today and he is a welcomed sight back into the Lazio starting eleven. Biglia would be paired with the work horse Parolo in the two more defensive positions of the 2-3 midfield formation Pioli likes to field. In front of these two men it would be Mauri in the centre of the three midfielders, he has not played the last two matches and it was nice to see the captain back in the starting core for Lazio. On Mauri’s left and right hand sides it would be Lazio’s midfield staples, Candreva and Anderson, both would be marked tightly today and their creativity and hard work is essential for Lazio. Leading the charge for Lazio up front it would be Miroslav Klose, he has helped do his part to get Lazio to where they currently are in this years’ campaign and he deserves the starting birth.

An early Roma free kick into the Lazio box was not able to be met and the Totti ball in went out for a Lazio corner. Candreva had a great chance after he cut back in from the left side but his ball into the Roma box was cleared away by De Sanctis. Only a minute later Klose had a glorious opportunity to head the ball in and he just missed the Roma goal, Candreva did well to get the ball into the middle of the Roma box once again, a missed opportunity for Lazio. Totti picked up a yellow card in the 9th minute for holding Anderson up from making an odd man rush up the field. Parolo had a weak shot on goal moments later but it did not test De Sanctis and he covered up the ball with ease. The game heated up in the 18th minute after a Klose tackle on Totti and Candreva aggressively came to his teammates defence. Lulic was very late on a challenge against Iturbe in the 23rd minute and he picked up a yellow card for his foul.

Midway through the first half and the game once again opened up once again, Lazio continued to try to push forward and looked the more determined for the victory, the Roma back line was always equal to the challenge. Roma had a slew of corner kicks just before the 30th minute mark of the first half and Lazio were able to clear away from harm. Gentiletti picked up a yellow card in the 32nd minute and he would need to be careful as the game moved on. A Lazio corner kick in the 35th minute was cleared away by Roma and on the counter attack Biglia picked up a yellow card for a challenge on Florenzi, a heated affair to say the least. Marchetti came out in the 40th minute to charge a ball sent into the Lazio box and he was able to get there before Florenzi could get on the end of the ball. Ultimately, it was a very entertaining first half of this derby but it ended a 0-0 tie and there was not much between these two sides.

The second half began with a great opportunity from Basta and his volley went just wide of De Sanctis, a great effort, Lazio were pressing. Lulic and Totti were both lucky not to be sent off in the 53rd minute, Lulic made a high challenge and Totti embellished, a very good referring decision to keep eleven men on the field for both teams. Lulic quickly came off in the field and made way for Cavanda, a clear tactical decision by Pioli. A flare from the Roma fans made its way into the Lazio box in the 57th minute and Marchetti threw it behind the net and play continued. Lazio had a great opportunity in the 60th minute as Candreva once again pressured but the ball into the Roma was cleared away from harm. As the half progressed there looked little between the two sides, perhaps the edge to Lazio for possession and opportunities on goal but Roma was always defensively organized.

Florenzi had a great chance in the 69th minute but it was cleared out for a corner kick, on the ensuing corner Ibarbo missed a glorious opportunity for Roma, he was alone in front and put it was of the net, Lazio would consider themselves fortunate. In the 73rd minute Roma would make good and Iturbe was able to put Roma in the lead off a ball into the box from Ibarbo, who would make good from his earlier missed opportunity, 1-0 for Roma. Naingolan pressed forward immediately after the goal and looked to open up the Lazio defence, it was another good opportunity for Roma. Pioli made his second substitution in the 76th minute and Djordjevic came on for Mauri, who left the field with a black eye to show for his efforts. In the 78th minute Biglia was unable to continue and Pioli was forced to make his final substitution and Cataldi came on to replace Biglia.

In the 82nd minute Lazio drew level, utter joy for all Laziali, Anderson played a great ball into the box and Klose unselfishly headed the ball back into the box and Djordjevic made no mistake with his header on goal, De Sanctis could not stop it and it was 1-1. Only a minute later and Roma took the lead once again, a ball from a set piece into the box was poorly managed by Lazio and it was 2-1, perhaps the goal was offside but the call on the field was not made and Lazio were behind once again. This was not the result that Lazio wanted and that Napoli were dreaming of, Lazio must now return to the training ground and prepare for their final match of the season against Napoli away in Naples, Lazio will need at least a draw in order to seal the third position in the table that will grant them the opportunity to qualify for the Champions League next season. Lazio played well today and were perhaps hard done by, they must regroup and put this loss behind them and believe that they can still achieve their goal this season.

Forza Lazio!
