Three points secured with quite some ease as Lazio got back to scoring and winning ways with a 3-0 defeat of newcomers Novara. With top three teams all winning in the weekend, Lazio had to get a comfortable win to close the gap to the competitors above, and create distance to the once below. Something Rocchi made sure by scoring two nice goals and being active throughout the game, while Marchetti continued his great run of games without having conceded; making it only one goal conceded in the last six games of competitive football.

Early on Lazio looked lively, and Novara seemed a little anxious and lost on the field. The home team created pressure and without the attacks turning into real danger the team has managed to create four corners after less than a quarter of an hour played. At the back the rare pairing of Biava – Stankevicius had little to do and on the sides Konko and Radu, assisted by Gonzalez and Lulic in the midfield, Lazio could use sides as well as the centre with Ledesma and Hernanes in order to move forward. Rocchi, today looking sharper and quicker than before this season, needed some time to gel with Klose and Lazio were given time on the ball to let the players find each other on the pitch.

On a corner after 16’, swung in by Hernanes from the right, Biava timed the cross perfectly and got in between Novara defenders and goalkeeper Ujkani. 1-0 on a well taken set piece was a fact, and soon a second was to come. Only seven minutes later Ledesma found Rocchi on a free kick from outside the penalty area, and the skipper beautifully headed home 2-0. Lazio looked comfortable and with some greater concentration on any of the following four corners before half time the score could have been even more positive for the biancocelesti. Instead Novara was given some more time on the ball and the visitors got their first attempt, a volley, on Marchetti after half an hour. The half ended with the game a little more evened put than at the start, but Lazio went resting with a secure lead.

No changes were made in half time, and the frequently discussed Cisse stayed on the bench and continued to watch his replacement have a good game. Before Rocchi would get the chance to close the game with his second goal of the evening Olimpia, who today had decided to catch the game from the top of Stadio Olimpico, and the rest of the supporters had to see Lazio let Novara dictate the pace early on in the second half. When Lazio slowly started falling back and many wondered why the team would let the visitors take over the game, the speedy duo of Klose and Rocchi started threatening the Novara back line. On a few occasions Rocchi, sometimes too unselfishly, tried to find his teammate and set him up rather than go for the finish himself. Tonight was not Klose’s night though as the German constantly failed and getting the ball in a good enough position to finish the attack of. The one time he got the perfect chance to score, after having passed Ujkani and had an open goal, he managed to miss the goal and had to go the full 90 minutes without scoring tonight.

It was instead Rocchi Gonzalez looked for with a well weighed cross inside the penalty area and the volley finish topped a brilliant night for the captain. 72 minutes into the game it was sealed and Lazio could afford to rest players. Hernanes, Konko and Rocchi were the players substituted this evening, with Cana, Scaloni and Cisse entering the field. The Frenchman, so much in need of a goal, had a positive ten minutes with a shot coming of the post as the best opportunity to double his tally at Lazio. Also Novara hit the woodwork once, in the 90th minute.

With three points collected at home, as easily as should be expected against a side of Novara’s quality, Lazio gave its supporters the first undoubted win at home this season. For once the tension was not at the very top throughout the two halves and many will be hoping for a similar display against Lecce next week.

Man Of The Match / Tommaso Rocchi

Great game from the Lazio captain. Worked hard, and his great positioning resulted in two goals. With these goals Rocchi is Lazio's in-form striker and could start again against Lecce.

Flop Of The Match / Ştefan Radu

The Romanian is struggling to find his best form after his long-term injury. Attacked more then usual today, something that resulted in him being caught out of position at several times. Also struggled when marking Novara players.
