Lazio suffered a heavy loss against Bologna in a game that should have been the Rome based team’s statement of intending to grab the third and final Champion League spot. As Udinese also lost points the evening could have further cemented Lazio’s place amongst the top three, but as things unfolded on the Sunday the dark clouds above Lazio once again gathered.

The defeat, a 3-1 humiliation against a team that had not managed to win against Lazio in Rome in many years, has not much to debate. Bologna were superior and Pioli had prepared his men more than well for the encounter. Leaving Di Vaio, the team’s top scorer and the man that most Laziali feared would be the main trouble maker of the evening, on the bench and playing with Diamanti-Ramirez-Acquafresca up front showed to be a perfect choice.

Lazio looked uninterested in a way that only Lazio can do. Coming from a second consecutive derby win, having created a two point cushion down to fourth place, and having only the domestic league to focus on were in beforehand giving the perfect circumstances to play under. As always the team was struck with injuries, but as the eleven players entered the pitch it was not the individual quality of the players that was not good enough, but rather the attitude and the collective work.

It did not take long before Lazio conceded the first goal, Portanova had an easy time scoring on a rebound from a Ramirez shot that had been saved by Marchetti after the whole Lazio team forgot to mark their players at the far side on a corner. Only eleven minutes into the game at that point, it already looked to become a dark evening for the packed and loud Curva Nord.

Lazio tried to step up the dominance of the ball after the Bologna goal, but did not manage to create any greater danger. In fact, Bologna looked to be in full control and again it became evident Lazio simply have no game plan to break teams that come to Olimpico in order to sit back and look at quick counters against a slow Lazio defence. Therefore, the 2-0 goal came as no surprise as Diamanti struck a ball that had been headed away by Marchetti from outside the penalty area and the always disappointing Zauri somehow managed to let the ball pass him, and the goal line.

The rest of the half saw a frustrated and annoyed Lazio try to work themselves into the game, but the energy and quality was simply missing. Many Lazio players showed an undesired attitude, complaining over fouls while committing quite serious ones themselves, and two minutes before half time yet another red card was handed out to a Lazio player. Having been struck by a plague of red cards lately, with Dias, Diakite and Konko being a few earlier examples, now it was Matuzalem that hit Diamanti straight in the face with his hand. Deliberately or not, the referee sent Matuzalem marching and Lazio now had the impossible task of turning a two goal deficit to a win in 45 minutes, with only ten players.

The second half was no brighter than the first. Reja substituted Zauri at the back for Alfaro up front, and Lazio did create a positive momentum for a short while. The tight Bologna defence did not let the home team create any chances though, and it was not until Rubin scored an own goal Lazio looked to have a chance to get something out of the game.

The hopes were put off within a minute from the goal though, as Gonzalez was also shown a red card when he fouled Ramirez as the last man. On the free kick that followed Krhin somehow found the back of the net despite the initial attempt being blocked by the wall, and with nine men there was never anything pointing at a Lazio comeback.
