Although F.C. Parma, founded Verdi Football Club in 1913 by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi, in recent history has had success in the top of Italian football, the team's first stint in Serie A was in 1990.
Before this the team had been elevating between leagues Serie B and D for 77 years with their best position as ninth place in Serie B in 1954/55 season as their best achievement. They did partecipate in one European tournament though: winning the Coppa delle Alpi in 1960/61 season, but it all ended in a relegation to Serie C after that season. Parma changed from Verdi Football Club to Parma Football Club already in December 1913, changing to Associazione Parma in 1966.
Quickly after their first promotion to Serie A in 1990 the team gained success. The first year ended in surprising sixth place ensuring them a place in the UEFA Cup although being eliminated after the first round. They won their first major trophy in the 1991/92 season as they beated Juventus 2-1 on aggregate. Parma seemed unstoppable and the year after they  won the Cup Winner's Cup over Antwerp and afterwards also the European Super Cup beating AC Milan. Later that year they lost the final in the Cup Winner's Cup.
The season after however they emerged victorious in the UEFA Cup winning over Juventus 2-1. In 1997 they achieved their so far best position in Serie A ending as runner's up and the year after a place in the Champions League although not succeeding in passing the group stage. In the 1998/99 season they achieved thir best season ever with help from stars Hernan Crespo and Juan Sebastian Veron they won the double: Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup beating Fiorentina and Marseille respectively. The same summer they won the Supercoppa italiana over AC Milan but from here the team started to decline.
After selling Hernan Crespo to Lazio as a world record transfer fee the team started to fall from fame and things didn't get better when they ran into financial problems in the start of the new millenium. Despite this the team on the Coppa Italia, their so far recent trophy, in 2002.
As their sponsor Parmalat went bankrupt in 2003 Parma went insolvent (Caxi: is this the right terme to use?? In Danish you say it like this, but I don't know if it's the same in English) and therefore changed their name to Football Club Parma. The team had some good seasons hereafter, especially thanks to Alberto Gilardino who scored 23 goals in two season in a row, but had to see themselves relegate to Serie B in 2008 after 18 years in Serie A. The team however returned to Serie A the season after under Francesco Guidolin.
