Internazionale vs Lazio
Match Date: 21-12-2014
Location: Milan
Stadium Giuseppe Meazza
Referee Tagliavento
Time 20:45 CET
Lazio look to head into the Christmas break with a solid performance against Inter in Milan. The race for European football in Serie A is extremely tight as only six points separate Lazio, Genoa and Sampdoria who are all tied for third place on 26 points, and Inter Milan, who sit in eleventh place with 20 points. Lazio will be looking not to give a direct competitor for a European football position the full three points and must battle through a slew of injuries.

Lazio are coming off a 3-0 victory in Rome to Atalanta, which was a great performance from the group as a unit and also saw some great individual performances from Mauri and Felipe Anderson. Inter are also coming off a win away to Chievo Verona. Inter have not had a campaign up to their standards at this point in the season, like Lazio, Inter have had to deal with several injuries to key players, including former Lazio star Hernanes, who battles for fitness and a starting berth over Guarin this Sunday. Mancini has taken over the coaching reigns for Inter and will be hoping that Hernanes will be ready to go Sunday against his former team to add a creative spark in midfield.

Lazio should field a similar starting line up to the group that was victorious last week against Atalanta. Both Cana and De Vrij should hold the fort down in the centre of defence with Basta and Radu on the right and left hand sides of the back line respectively. I liked Basta’s constant movements forward up to the Atalanta penalty box last week and a similar performance will be needed from him against Inter. Lazio will need to make sure he is adequately covered as Kovacic, Palacio and Icardi will look to move quickly on the counter attack, they can do so with the utmost precision.

In the midfield, Parolo should slot back after serving his one match ban in place of Ledesma, Lulic should start on the left side of midfield and Gonzalez will likely start on the right side of midfield, taking the place of the injured Candreva, Lucas Biglia also looks likely to miss this match due to injury. The Lazio midfield will need to put in solid performances and leave little space for Inter to exploit pressing forward. Ranocchia’s height in the centre of defence will be an issue for Lazio to work around with their balls into the box, look no further than Klose’s goal against Inter earlier this year in January, Candreva played a ball into the box under waist level, allowing Klose to pounce on the first time volley.

Up front, Lazio will likely start with Djordevic in the centre of attack with Felipe Anderson and Mauri on the right and left hand sides. Anderson will need to continue his brilliant recent form and press the Inter defence, you can expect to see Anderson and Mauri move back and forth between the right and left hand sides to create unpredictability for the Inter defence. Both Djordjevic and Mauri will look to add to their team leading goal tallies of six each.

Klose has a good track record against Inter and it would be nice to see him pick up some more minutes in this fixture, especially given that he has recently claimed his happiness with his current situation at Lazio, putting previous rumours of his discontent to bed. Djordjevic needs to get back to his scoring ways or Klose will pick up some starting berths in the new year in order to keep him honest.

Probable Line Up: Lazio (4-3-3): Marchetti; Basta, De Vrij, Cana, Radu, Gonzalez, Parolo, Lulic; Mauri, Djordjevic, Anderson.
