AS Roma vs Lazio
Match Date: 11-01-2015
Location: Rome
Stadium Olimpico
Referee Orsato
Time 15:00 CET
The fiercest rivalry in all of sports is upon us, the first Rome derby of the 2014-2015 Serie A campaign is finally here, the city of Rome must be quiet in anticipation of this famous Lazio and Roma rivalry. Lazio are having an excellent campaign up to the week eighteen derby fixture and are tied for third with Napoli for a spot in Champions League football. Roma, on the other hand sit only one point behind league leaders Juventus. Lazio will finish the month of January with Napoli and AC Milan at home in Rome, damage limitation is of the utmost importance during this string of matches. Lazio are coming off an incredible 3-0 win against Sampdoria, where Filipe Anderson once again showed his quality. Roma are coming off a controversial 1-0 win over Udinese where Astori’s header may not have crossed the line.

Political ideologies and pride aside, as hard as it is to do; this match is very interesting on paper, both Lazio and Roma are both in good form. Lazio have not lost in Serie A since their November 22nd defeat to Juventus, Roma have only lost twice all season, both coming against Juventus and Napoli. The difference between Lazio and Roma in the table is really that Roma have been able to come out on the winning side of close fixtures, take both Lazio’s and Roma’s matches against Genoa and Udinese as case in point; Roma victorious against both by scores of 1-0 and Lazio on the losing end to both opponents by a score of 1-0. Make no mistake about this match, Lazio will be extremely prepared, they are well aware of what is at stake and will play as technical a match against Roma as humanly possible.

Lazio enter the derby with some new injury concerns, Lulic will not be available due to a knee injury, and Cana is day to day and is questionable to be available. If Cana is not ready this poses a problem for Lazio, Radu may not be able to move into the centre of defence with De Vrij since Lulic is injured and cannot slide into the left back position, Novaretti could feature here in this match partnering with De Vrij in the middle of defence. Basta should start at right back and Marchetti will most likely start in goal, he is Pioli’s preference in net. Biglia, Parolo should start in midfield and will probably be joined with Candreva, who will be back from injury. The Lazio midfield will need to work in unison with the back four, especially if there is a new face in defence, Roma’s attack can punish only the slightest of mistakes.

Up front for Lazio, we will more than likely see the same group that featured against Sampdoria. There is just no way Felipe Anderson does not start this match, his blistering form has caught eyes all over the football world, it will be interesting to see if he can have an impact on the Roma defence who are the second best in the league allowing only eleven goals against, done better by only Juventus at eight. Mauri and Djordjevic should join Anderson up front to round out the starting group for Lazio. It would be nice to see a bit more from Djordjevic, although he scored against Sampdoria, it was a gift from Anderson into an empty net from only two feet away, he has stated in the media that his goal is to score in the derby, here is your time Filip. Klose may feature here, and his experience in a fixture of this magnitude is huge, but without regular playing time he may find it hard to reach a rhythm and fit in with the pace of the game.

It really cannot be understated how important of a fixture this is for all Laziali, the anticipation is consuming to say the least. Just the thought of Lazio entering the field on Sunday brings nothing but excitement to mind. Winning the Scudetto may not be a realistic goal for Lazio, challenging for Champions league football is. Achieving this goal with a derby victory over Roma will make Lazio’s success this campaign even sweeter. The ultimate question that will be answered on Sunday is: can Lazio be victorious against Roma in the derby? I say yes they can, what better time than now!

Ragazzi buona fortuna! Forza Lazio!
