Lazio host Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Monday night in round twenty-two of the Serie A Campionato. Lazio are coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Cesena last week, they will surely feel they missed an opportunity to close the gap to Roma with that poor performance. Genoa come to Rome having drawn at home last week to Fiorentina, a strong result for them as Fiorentina are in fine form, and Burdisso was sent off in the 81st minute, forcing Genoa to play the remainder of the match with only ten men. The reverse fixture of this match at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris has Genoa victorious by a score of 1-0, a match that Lazio looked stronger in but could not find goal. In the closing moments of that match, De Vrij was sent off in the 85th minute, and Pinilla sealed the win for Genoa only moments later. Genoa has had a strong season thus far and sit ninth in the table on 28 points, Lazio are five points ahead on 34 points, tied with Sampdoria for fourth. Lazio really need to get back on track with a victory and take the full three points, they cannot continue to allow Napoli to creep ahead of them in 3rd place, the final Champions League position. Genoa is a strong team, they are well coached, tactically sound, have an experienced roster and have Lazio’s number, this will not be an easy match.

Marchetti should start in goal for Lazio, this could come down to a goalie showdown, his counterpart Perin is a wonderful keeper, one or both of these men could shape this match. In the centre of defence for Lazio, we should expect to see De Vrij and Mauricio, who appears to be well liked by Pioli, Radu and Basta should round out the left and right hand sides of defence respectively. In midfield, Biglia and Parolo should start, Cataldi will more than likely also start, he deserves the opportunity to make amends for the fluke own goal against Cesena, Onazi and/or Ledesma could also pick up some playing time in this fixture. Up front for Lazio there are some questions as Klose is doubtful and Anderson is apparently healthy and is expected to play, but it is unknown if he will start. If Felipe Anderson is fully fit he should return to his starting position given his blistering form before his injury in the derby match, if Pioli chooses to ease him back into full match fitness Mauri should start on the left side of the attack. The right hand side of the attack should be Candreva in this match, he is looking to make right the loss to Cesena and has publically apologized to the Laziali for this loss, I expect to see Candreva in fine form.

If Klose is not healthy, we may see Bryan Perea start in the centre of attack. Regardless of all of the Gennaio Mercato rumours regarding a striker, it was always going to be Perea, as Lazio recalled him from his loan spell at Perugia in Serie B. He wasn’t particularly effective at Perugia and only had one goal to his tally, if he plays he will need to make the most of his chances and be nothing less than clinical with his finishing. Tounkara is also a natural centre striker and will be eagerly awaiting an opportunity from Pioli. This is an important match for Lazio, the pressure is on the entire squad after the loss to Cesena. Serie A is extremely competitive, even with the departures of both Matri and Captain Luca Antonelli, Gasperini will have his troops ready. Lazio need to find more creativity in attack and earn opportunities from better positions on goal. Lazio cannot be satisfied with possession, Genoa can numb an opponent for 90 minutes by shutting them down and in return make the most of one or two opportunities to earn victory, they are the essence of Italian football. Lazio must enter this match with focus, determination and belief, a loss here will raise doubts of achieving Champions League football, and this is a slippery slope. I believe Lazio will make right and find a way to win.
