Lazio host Palermo on Sunday in week 24 of the Serie A Campionato. Lazio are coming off a 1-0 win against Udinese in Friuli thanks to a cheeky penalty shot from Candreva. The push on Klose for the penalty call was suspect and Udinese should really feel hard done by. Lazio’s performance in the Udinese match delivered a result but was not one worthy of the history books. Palermo enters Rome with a team that is in form, Napoli can attest to that fact after the 3-1 shock loss to Palermo the week prior. Palermo are more than capable of finding the net and their attack can be lethal, I expect to see them press the Lazio defence to find their weakness. The reverse fixture of this match had Lazio victorious by a score of 4-0, it was a game that was the catalyst for Lazio to begin a string of positive performances and enter them into the discussion of Champions league football. This match will require the utmost attention to tactical detail for Pioli, as well as sure desire and execution from his men on the field, if shock losses to Cesena and Empoli can happen, by all means so can Palermo.

Marchetti should return to his place in goal for Lazio after coming off his suspension from his red card against Genoa, Berisha played well in his absence last week against Udinese and he should be commended. In the centre of the defence for Lazio we should see De Vrij and Mauricio, Cana is available but Pioli does appear to lean slightly towards Mauricio, either of the two men supporting De Vrij would be unsurprising. In Midfield for Lazio, Biglia and Parolo are Pioli’s fixtures, they are a certainty, Biglia needs to perform better and show his worth, he was poor against Udinese. Onazi started against Udinese and held his own but was withdrawn early due to an early yellow card, his erratic challenges earned him a half time substitution, Pioli made the correct call at that moment in the game. With that in mind, it will either be Onazi getting the call to start or Cataldi to join both Parolo and Biglia. If Cataldi does earn a start, I hope that he will show more of his abilities and make the most of the opportunities he has been given, he is clearly a talent, but it is time for him to excel and prove his worth.

Up front for Lazio, it will inevitably be Klose leading the way, his recent extension to finish his career with Lazio for the 2015-2016 season should give him an extra step and I expect him to be the world class champion that he is. Perea came off the bench against Udinese but was unimpressive, if earns an opportunity against Palermo he needs a better performance. In support of Klose, Lazio will most certainly start with Candreva on his right and Mauri on his left. Felipe Anderson will serve a one match ban and be unavailable for Lazio. Mauri will be coming off a one match ban and should start, Mauri’s experience will be needed to guide Lazio through this challenge. Watching European football midweek and it clearly becomes cemented in my mind that Lazio must earn what they are destined to achieve. Lazio cannot accept another let down performance, no more excuses will be accepted, it is time to deliver or die trying. The Biancocelesti must continue to believe as a group and work together as a team under Pioli’s tactical guidance; if so, victory will be achieved.
