Location: Rome
Stadium Olimpico
Referee Rizzoli
Time 18:00 CET
Lazio play next on Monday in perhaps their most important game of the 2014-2015 Serie A season against arch rivals Roma, in what is going to shape up as a derby for the ages. This is a direct battle for Champions League football and the winner will all but cement their position in the coveted European competition next season. The world may not necessarily all be watching this match but the entire city of Rome will be shut down on Monday in eager anticipation of witnessing which colour will shine brightest in the eternal city. Roma enter this match with an impressive come from behind 2-1 victory over Udinese last time out in Serie A. Lazio were also able to come away with three vital points last week in Serie A with a scrappy 1-0 win over Sampdoria away in Genoa, thanks to a Gentiletti goal off a corner kick. Mid-week, Lazio were defeated by Juventus, 2-1 in extra time, in the Coppa Italia final, a performance that should have the group proud. Pioli will need to ensure that his men put this tough loss behind them and turn their attention to the league campaign and finish in the top three positions.

In net for Lazio on Monday, we should see Marchetti back in goal, Berisha played in the Coppa Italia final mid-week in order to give Marchetti rest specifically for this contest. In the centre of defence for Lazio, De Vrij should start, he has done well to regain full match fitness and he will be needed if Lazio hope to emerge victorious in this derby match. Gentiletti has started two matches in a row now so it is uncertain if Pioli will start him alongside De Vrij in the centre of the Lazio defence, it may also be Mauricio who featured against Juventus off the bench. Radu picked up an injury in the Coppa Italia final so he will not be available for Lazio, more than likely, Pioli will drop Lulic back into the left back position. On the right side of the defensive core for Lazio it will unquestionably be Basta, he played well against Juventus and is an integral part of the Lazio back line.

In midfield for Lazio, we should see a 2-3 centre formation; Parolo and Cataldi should feature in the two deeper positions. It is hard to imagine that Pioli doesn’t find a spot in the starting eleven for Mauri, he has not played the last two matches and his experience will be needed against Roma. He should start in front of both Parolo and Cataldi in the centre of the midfield. Perhaps Mauri’s legs were wearing weak as this campaign progressed, if that was the case he should be ready to go on Monday and be full of ambition. On the left and right hand sides of Mauri in the midfield for Lazio, it will be the two work horses, Anderson and Candreva, both of these two men were the most visible in the Juventus Coppa Italia tie and they will both need to shine once again in order for Lazio to succeed, one half is not enough, it must be ninety minutes of determination and desire. In the centre of attack for Lazio, Klose should lead the way, Djordjevic is now healthy and he will surely pick up some time in this match; however, Klose has earned the right to start the final two matches. Let’s hope that when Djordjevic does come on he is able to launch another blistering strike on his opponent’s goal, this time not to be denied by two goal posts, as was the case against Juventus.

This is an exciting time to be a Lazio fan as the group holds their own fate in hands with only two matches remaining; Lazio must not look ahead and enter this derby with only one thing in mind, victory and three points. Roma have turned the corner of late and Garcia has had them playing much better football, he will have his squad prepared and organized. Pioli will also have his warriors well prepared and the Biancocelesti believe that they are able to achieve what they initially set out to do before this season began. This match will show all Laziali exactly what our faithful team is capable of; a victory against Roma will show all of European football that indeed Lazio are for real and deserve their spoils. The blue side of Rome shines bright on Monday night in what will be a monumental Lazio performance that will be remembered by all for years to come.

Forza Lazio!
